Bacteriostatic Water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a preservative that inhibits bacterial growth and allows a vial to be accessed multiple times over an extended period.
Purpose in the Laboratory
Lyophilized research compounds are supplied as a dry powder and must be reconstituted into solution before use in experimental protocols. Bacteriostatic water is the standard diluent for this purpose, as its preservative content permits repeated withdrawal from a single vial without the contamination risk associated with plain sterile water.
Handling and Storage
